About the Affenpinscher

The Affenpinscher is a small, wiry-coated companion from Germany whose name means 'monkey-terrier,' a nod to its mischievous, ape-like face and expression. Originally bred to dispatch rats in stables, kitchens and shops, it retains a bold, terrier-like confidence packed into a toy frame. Sturdy and self-assured, it is curious, comical and fiercely loyal to its people, often behaving as though unaware of its tiny size. It suits owners who enjoy a big personality in a small dog and can meet its need for firm, patient training and companionship.

Every dog is an individual — genetics, socialization, health, training, and environment matter more than breed averages.

Where this breed shines

  • Big, comical personality in a portable size
  • Low-shedding wiry coat
  • Alert little watchdog
  • Adapts well to apartment living

Things to consider

  • Stubborn and can be tricky to house-train
  • Prone to alarm barking

  • Wiry coat needs regular hand-stripping or trimming

History

The Affenpinscher developed in 17th-century Germany as a ratting dog for homes, stables and shops. Over time smaller specimens were refined into a lady's companion, and the breed influenced other rough-coated toys such as the Brussels Griffon. It was recognized by the AKC in 1936.

Temperament

Confident, alert and endlessly entertaining, the Affenpinscher is affectionate with its family but can be territorial and stubborn. It is fearless for its size and quick to alarm-bark at strangers. Early socialization tempers its bossy streak, and it bonds closely with attentive owners.

Questions to ask a Affenpinscher breeder

  • Are the parents patella-luxation clear?
  • Has the litter had a cardiac evaluation?
  • How is the puppy socialized to noise and handling?
  • What is the temperament of the dam and sire?

Health considerations to discuss

Patellar luxation. Slipping kneecaps are common in toy breeds and can cause lameness.

Legg-Calve-Perthes disease. Degeneration of the hip joint head can affect small breeds and may require surgery.

Heart murmurs. Some lines develop valve issues, so cardiac screening of breeding stock is advised.
