About the Afghan Hound
The Afghan Hound is an ancient sighthound from the mountains of Afghanistan, prized for its flowing silky coat, aristocratic bearing and remarkable speed and agility over rugged terrain. Bred to course hare, gazelle and even leopard alongside mounted and foot hunters, it combines an independent, aloof dignity with sudden bursts of athletic power. Elegant yet clownish at home, it is famously self-willed and forms deep but selective bonds. It best suits experienced owners who appreciate its beauty, respect its independence and can commit to demanding daily coat care and secure exercise.
Every dog is an individual — genetics, socialization, health, training, and environment matter more than breed averages.

History
One of the oldest dog types, the Afghan Hound hunted for centuries across Afghanistan and surrounding regions before being brought to Britain in the early 20th century. Western breeders refined the glamorous show coat while preserving its coursing ability. The AKC recognized the breed in 1926.
Temperament
Aloof and dignified with strangers yet playful and mischievous with family, the Afghan Hound is highly independent and not eager to please in the conventional sense. It has a strong prey drive and needs secure, off-lead running in safe areas. Patient, non-repetitive training works best.
