About the Akbash

The Akbash is a large white livestock guardian dog from western Turkey, developed over millennia to live among sheep and goats and repel wolves and other predators. Combining mastiff substance with sighthound speed and agility, it is a calm, independent and highly territorial protector that works with minimal human direction. Reserved and serious, it bonds strongly with its flock and family yet remains suspicious of strangers. The Akbash suits owners with land, livestock or a genuine guarding need who can provide firm, patient leadership and early socialization, not first-time pet owners.

Every dog is an individual — genetics, socialization, health, training, and environment matter more than breed averages.

  • Calm and steady around its charges
  • Fast and agile for its great size
  • Weather-hardy and low-grooming

Things to consider

  • Highly independent and not conventionally obedient
  • Strong territoriality and night barking

History

The Akbash originated on the plains of western Turkey, where shepherds selected white dogs to blend with flocks and be distinguished from predators. It has guarded livestock for thousands of years and was imported to North America, where it has been used in predator-control programs. It is recognized by the UKC.

Temperament

Independent, calm and deeply protective, the Akbash makes its own decisions as a guardian and is not naturally biddable. It is gentle with its charges but vigilant and wary of intruders and strange animals. It needs an owner who understands and respects its autonomous working nature.

Health considerations to discuss

Hip dysplasia. As a giant breed it is prone to hip malformation; parents should be screened.

Bloat (gastric torsion). Deep-chested dogs risk life-threatening stomach twisting requiring emergency care.

Hypothyroidism. Thyroid deficiency can occur and is manageable with medication once diagnosed.
