About the American Foxhound

The American Foxhound is a lean, long-legged scenthound bred in colonial America to chase fox across open country, developed from English and French hounds by early settlers including George Washington. Built for speed, stamina and a melodious trailing voice, it is a tireless pack hunter with a gentle, easygoing disposition. Sociable, tolerant and affectionate, it is good with people and other dogs but retains a powerful nose and independent hunting drive. It suits rural or very active owners who can provide extensive daily exercise, companionship and secure space, rather than sedentary apartment homes.

Every dog is an individual — genetics, socialization, health, training, and environment matter more than breed averages.
