About the American Hairless Terrier

The American Hairless Terrier is a lively, inquisitive companion and rat-terrier descendant that arose from a hairless variation of the Rat Terrier in Louisiana. Available in truly hairless and coated forms, it is a small, muscular and energetic dog with the alert, spirited character typical of terriers but without the strong prey aggression of some ratters. Smart, playful and affectionate, it bonds closely with family and is often suggested for allergy-conscious households, though no dog is fully hypoallergenic. It suits active owners wanting a trainable, portable companion who can protect the hairless dog's skin from sun and cold.

Every dog is an individual — genetics, socialization, health, training, and environment matter more than breed averages.

History

The American Hairless Terrier began in 1972 when a hairless puppy appeared in a Rat Terrier litter in Louisiana; the Scott family bred from her to establish the line. It became recognized as a distinct breed, and the AKC granted full recognition in 2016. Both hairless and coated varieties exist.

Temperament

Energetic, intelligent and affectionate, the American Hairless Terrier is curious and playful with a strong bond to its family. It is alert and makes a good watchdog but is generally friendly, and lacking a coat it is often less driven to dig and hunt. It is responsive to positive training.

Health considerations to discuss

Skin conditions. Lacking a protective coat, the hairless variety is prone to sunburn, rashes and abrasions.

Patellar luxation. Slipping kneecaps can occur in this small terrier and affect movement.

Primary lens luxation. An inherited eye condition preventable through DNA testing of breeding stock.
