About the Artois Hound
The Artois Hound is a compact, sturdily built French scenthound bred to hunt hare, roe deer and other game in a pack or small group. Once widespread in the Artois region of northern France, it nearly vanished after the World Wars and survives today in very small numbers, sustained by a handful of dedicated breeders. It carries a deep, resonant voice, an excellent nose and a determined, methodical hunting style. Tricolour and muscular, it is affectionate and steady with its handler but retains strong prey drive and independence, making it far better suited to active rural or hunting homes than to sedentary town living.
Every dog is an individual — genetics, socialization, health, training, and environment matter more than breed averages.

History
The breed descends from old French hound stock native to the Artois province, with references dating back several centuries. Its numbers collapsed after both World Wars, and a reconstruction effort in the mid-20th century used surviving specimens to stabilize the type. It remains rare and is maintained primarily as a working pack hound in France.
Temperament
Artois Hounds are gentle and devoted with their people yet independent and single-minded once on a scent. They work cooperatively in packs and generally get along with other dogs. Their strong prey drive and stamina mean they need a job and secure containment.
Questions to ask a Artois Hound breeder
- Are the parents actively worked or tested for hunting instinct?
- What is the coefficient of inbreeding given the small population?
- Have hips and eyes been screened?
Health considerations to discuss
Limited gene pool. The tiny population raises the risk of inherited conditions concentrating; ask about ancestry diversity.
Ear infections. Long pendant ears trap moisture and need regular cleaning and drying.
Hip dysplasia. As with many medium-large hounds, screening breeding stock is advisable.
