Aussie Newfie Puppies for Sale

About the Aussie Newfie

The Aussie Newfie crosses the Australian Shepherd with the giant, gentle Newfoundland, yielding a large, sturdy dog with a thick double coat and an even, affectionate temperament. These dogs often combine the Aussie's herding intelligence with the Newfoundland's famous patience and love of water. Expect a substantial companion that is devoted to family, tolerant of children, and calmer than a purebred Aussie but still in need of daily exercise. The coat is heavy and sheds considerably, and the large frame means owners should watch for joint and growth issues. Drooling and a big appetite come with the Newfoundland heritage.

Every dog is an individual — genetics, socialization, health, training, and environment matter more than breed averages.

Where this breed shines

  • Gentle, patient temperament that suits families with children
  • Calmer and more relaxed than a purebred Australian Shepherd
  • Loyal and eager to please

Things to consider

  • Large size means higher food and space needs
  • Heavy shedding plus drooling from the Newfoundland side
  • Prone to joint problems that require careful growth management

History

The Aussie Newfie is a modern designer cross bringing together a herding breed and a working water-and-draft breed. It has no kennel-club recognition and appears mainly as a first-generation hybrid. The Newfoundland was developed in the Canadian Maritimes for water rescue and hauling, while the Australian Shepherd is an American stock dog.

Temperament

These dogs are typically gentle, loyal, and patient, blending the Newfoundland's sweet 'nanny dog' nature with the Aussie's alert intelligence. They are usually good with children and other pets when socialized. Their size and strength call for early training so that a friendly dog does not become an unmanageable one.

Questions to ask a Aussie Newfie breeder

  • Have the parents had hip, elbow, and heart clearances?
  • Has the Newfoundland parent been tested for cystinuria and heart disease?
  • What is the expected adult size range for this litter?

Health considerations to discuss

Hip and elbow dysplasia. Both large parents can pass on joint problems; orthopedic screening is important.

Subaortic stenosis. A heart condition seen in Newfoundlands; ask for a cardiac evaluation of that parent.

Bloat (gastric torsion). Deep-chested large dogs are at risk; feeding management helps reduce it.
