About the Azawakh

The Azawakh is a tall, elegant West African sighthound bred by nomadic peoples of the Sahel to course game and guard camps across the desert. Extremely lean and leggy, with prominent bone structure and a fine short coat, it is built for speed and endurance in scorching heat. Beyond hunting, it served as a loyal camp guardian, and it retains a reserved, aloof dignity toward strangers while being deeply devoted to its own people. Sensitive and intensely bonded, the Azawakh forms strong attachments and can be pack-oriented. It needs sighthound-appropriate exercise, gentle handling, warmth and secure fencing to thrive.

Every dog is an individual — genetics, socialization, health, training, and environment matter more than breed averages.

History

The breed originates from the Sahel region spanning Mali, Niger and neighbouring countries, where it has been kept for centuries by nomadic Tuareg and other peoples. It reached Europe in the 1970s and was later recognized internationally. It remains relatively rare and close to its landrace roots.

Temperament

Azawakhs are affectionate and loyal with their family yet naturally aloof and reserved with strangers. They are sensitive, alert and can be protective, retaining a guarding heritage unusual among sighthounds. They bond intensely and do best with calm, respectful handling.

Health considerations to discuss

Hypothyroidism. Reported in the breed; thyroid testing of breeding dogs is useful.

Cold sensitivity. The lean body and thin coat offer little insulation; provide coats in winter.

Anesthesia sensitivity. Like other sighthounds, low body fat affects drug metabolism; inform your vet.
