About the Barbado da Terceira

The Barbado da Terceira is a shaggy-coated herding and cattle dog from the island of Terceira in the Portuguese Azores. Developed to gather and drive semi-wild cattle over rugged island pastures, it is a medium-sized, agile worker with a wavy coat, an expressive face framed by a beard and abundant energy. Long a local island dog, it has only recently been formally recognized and remains uncommon outside Portugal. Intelligent, cheerful and people-oriented, it bonds closely with its family and makes a lively companion for active homes. Its herding drive, stamina and coat care mean it does best with owners who can give it work, exercise and grooming time.

Every dog is an individual — genetics, socialization, health, training, and environment matter more than breed averages.

History

The breed developed on Terceira Island in the Azores, likely from a mix of herding dogs brought by settlers over the centuries. It was used to manage cattle across the island's pastures and became a distinct local type. Portuguese cynological recognition came only in recent decades, and it is still rare internationally.

Health considerations to discuss

Hip dysplasia. As a medium working breed, hip screening of parents is sensible.

Coat and skin care. The dense wavy coat can trap debris and moisture; regular grooming prevents skin issues.

Limited health data. Being newly recognized, breed-wide health information is still developing.
