About the Basenji

The Basenji is a small, elegant African sighthound-type breed famous for being 'barkless', producing an unusual yodel-like sound instead of a typical bark. Originating in central Africa, where it was used to hunt small game by both sight and scent, it is compact, fine-boned and remarkably catlike, even grooming itself and being notably clean. It has a wrinkled forehead, tightly curled tail and an alert, inquisitive expression. Intelligent but independent and mischievous, the Basenji is affectionate on its own terms and forms strong bonds while remaining aloof with strangers. Its strong prey drive, escape artistry and stubborn streak make it a rewarding but challenging companion.

Every dog is an individual — genetics, socialization, health, training, and environment matter more than breed averages.

History

The Basenji is an ancient type descended from African hunting dogs, with roots in the Congo region where it was used to flush game into nets. Specimens were brought to Europe and later the United States in the early to mid 20th century, and periodic imports of African stock have refreshed the gene pool. It is one of the oldest recognized breeds.

Temperament

Basenjis are clever, curious and independent, often described as catlike in their aloof self-possession and cleanliness. They bond closely with their people yet can be reserved with strangers and other dogs. Their strong prey drive and problem-solving nature demand secure containment and patient training.
