About the Basset Artesien Normand

The Basset Artesien Normand is a short-legged French scenthound bred to hunt small game like rabbit and hare at a pace a hunter can follow on foot. Descended from Artois and Normandy hound lines, it is a refined, long-bodied basset with a noble head, long low-set ears and a tricolour or bicolour coat. It is one of the ancestral bassets behind the more familiar Basset Hound but is lighter and more athletic in build. Gentle, sociable and even-tempered, it makes a charming companion with a strong nose and a merry voice. Its scent drive, appetite and need for exercise mean it does best with owners who enjoy walks and outdoor activity.

Every dog is an individual — genetics, socialization, health, training, and environment matter more than breed averages.

Health considerations to discuss

Intervertebral disc disease. The long back and short legs predispose to spinal problems; avoid excess jumping and weight.

Ear infections. Long low-set ears trap moisture and need frequent cleaning.

Obesity. A hearty appetite and low-slung frame make weight control important for joint health.
