About the Bearded Collie

The Bearded Collie is a lively, shaggy-coated herding breed from Scotland, developed to drove sheep and cattle across the Highlands in all weather. Beneath its long, flat, weatherproof double coat is an athletic, medium-sized dog with a bouncy, exuberant character and an ever-present twinkle in its eye. Bred for independent decision-making on the hills, the 'Beardie' is intelligent, enthusiastic and famously good-natured. It bonds warmly with its family, gets on well with children and other dogs, and stays youthful and playful for years. Its abundant coat demands regular grooming, and its energy and herding drive call for plenty of exercise and engagement.

Every dog is an individual — genetics, socialization, health, training, and environment matter more than breed averages.

History

The Bearded Collie is an old Scottish droving breed used for centuries to work sheep and cattle in the Highlands. The modern breed was revived and standardized in the mid-20th century, largely through the efforts of British breeders, from surviving working stock. It has since become popular as both a companion and a show dog.

Temperament

Bearded Collies are cheerful, affectionate and energetic, with an outgoing and playful nature. They are intelligent and biddable but retain an independent herding streak and a bouncy exuberance. They thrive on family involvement and can become bored or noisy if left understimulated.
