About the Bedlington Terrier

The Bedlington Terrier is a distinctive English terrier whose curly, lamb-like coat and arched, greyhound-influenced outline give it a gentle, ornamental appearance that belies a tough working past. Bred in the mining region of Northumberland to kill vermin and course small game, it is fast, agile and surprisingly game beneath its soft looks. It has a lithe, racy build and a springy gait, combining terrier tenacity with sighthound speed. Affectionate, mild-mannered and devoted at home, it is more even-tempered than many terriers but can be spirited and determined when roused. Its unusual coat needs regular clipping, and it retains a strong prey drive.

Every dog is an individual — genetics, socialization, health, training, and environment matter more than breed averages.

Where this breed shines

  • Low-shedding coat suited to allergy-conscious homes
  • Affectionate and milder-tempered than many terriers
  • Athletic, agile and adaptable to town living

Things to consider

  • Curly coat requires regular clipping and grooming
  • Strong prey drive toward small animals
  • Can be feisty with unfamiliar dogs

History

The breed arose in early 19th-century Northumberland, taking its name from the mining town of Bedlington, where it was kept by workers to hunt vermin and poach game. Its racy build reflects an infusion of sighthound blood. It later became fashionable as a companion and show dog while retaining working ability.

Temperament

Bedlingtons are affectionate, cheerful and relatively mild for terriers, making devoted family companions. They are loyal and good-natured but retain courage and a strong prey drive when aroused. Some can be assertive with other dogs, so early socialization helps.
