About the Bergamasco Sheepdog
The Bergamasco Sheepdog is an ancient Italian herding and flock-guarding breed instantly recognized by its unique coat of matted 'flocks' or felted mats that form naturally as the dog matures. Developed in the Alps around Bergamo to work and protect sheep in harsh mountain conditions, it is a sturdy, patient and highly intelligent dog whose distinctive coat provided insulation and protection from predators and weather. Calm, watchful and deeply devoted, it bonds strongly with its family and shows a thoughtful, independent problem-solving nature honed by centuries of working with flocks. Once the flocks form, its coat needs little brushing, but the dog needs companionship and engagement.
Every dog is an individual — genetics, socialization, health, training, and environment matter more than breed averages.

The Bergamasco is a very old breed from the Italian Alps near Bergamo, used for centuries by shepherds to herd and guard sheep. Its population dwindled with the decline of wool industries before being revived by dedicated Italian breeders in the 20th century. It is recognized internationally and prized for its unusual coat and steady temperament.
