About the Black and Tan Coonhound

The Black and Tan Coonhound is a powerful American scenthound bred to trail and tree raccoons and other game by night, working entirely by nose. Wearing a striking coal-black coat with rich tan markings and long, low-set ears, it combines a superb nose with stamina, a deep bawling voice and a determined, methodical hunting style. Descended from Bloodhound and Foxhound stock, it 'gives voice' to alert hunters and holds quarry at bay in a tree. Easygoing, affectionate and mellow at home, it is a friendly, tolerant family dog that gets along with children and other dogs. As a driven scenthound, it needs secure fencing, patient training and regular exercise to satisfy its nose and energy.

Every dog is an individual — genetics, socialization, health, training, and environment matter more than breed averages.
