About the Blue Lacy
The Blue Lacy is a lean, athletic American working dog developed in Texas as an all-purpose ranch and hunting dog. Named for the Lacy brothers who bred it, the dog comes in blue (a range of gray shades), red, and tricolor, always with striking light amber to orange eyes. Fast, intense, and remarkably driven, it excels at herding cattle, hog hunting, blood-trailing, and treeing game. This is a working breed through and through: highly intelligent, sensitive, and eager to please but demanding of exercise and purpose. It bonds closely with its handler and needs a job, wide-open space, and consistent training to be content.
Every dog is an individual — genetics, socialization, health, training, and environment matter more than breed averages.

History
The Blue Lacy originated in the mid-19th century in Texas, bred by the Lacy family who settled there around 1858. They sought a versatile dog to work cattle, hunt hogs, and manage livestock on the frontier, reportedly blending greyhound, scenthound, and possibly coyote or wolf-type stock, though exact origins are debated. The breed became the official state dog of Texas in 2005. It is recognized by the National Lacy Dog Association and some working registries rather than the AKC.
Temperament
Energetic, intense, and intelligent, the Blue Lacy is a driven worker that thrives on having a job and close partnership with its owner. It is sensitive and responsive, learning quickly but reacting poorly to harsh handling. Devoted and eager to please, it can be alert and reserved with strangers. Without ample physical and mental work it becomes restless and difficult to live with.
Questions to ask a Blue Lacy breeder
- What work do the parents do and from what lines do they come?
- How do you evaluate and socialize puppy temperaments?
- Are the parents screened for hip and eye problems?
- How much daily work will this puppy realistically need?
Health considerations to discuss
Hip dysplasia. Active build makes joint soundness important; ask about hip evaluations.
Color dilution alopecia. Dilute blue coats can be prone to thinning coat and skin issues.
Skin sensitivity. Thin single coat offers little protection from cuts, sun, and cold.
