About the Blue Picardy Spaniel
The Blue Picardy Spaniel is an elegant French gundog prized for its calm nature and versatility in wet, cold terrain. Its distinctive speckled blue-gray and black coat, feathered legs, and gentle expression set it apart from other pointing spaniels. Bred to work marshes and moors, it is a methodical, close-working hunter with an excellent nose and a strong desire to please. Away from the field it is a soft, affectionate, and sociable companion that bonds deeply with family and tolerates children and other dogs well. It needs regular vigorous exercise and thrives with owners who enjoy the outdoors and offer gentle, patient training.
Every dog is an individual — genetics, socialization, health, training, and environment matter more than breed averages.

History
The Blue Picardy Spaniel developed in the Somme region of northern France in the early 20th century, reputedly from crosses between Picardy Spaniels and English Setters, including gordon-type dogs brought by British hunters. It was recognized as a distinct breed in France in 1938. It remains uncommon outside France and neighboring countries, with a modest following in Canada. It is recognized by the FCI and the Canadian Kennel Club.
Temperament
Gentle, sociable, and eager to please, the Blue Picardy Spaniel is a calm and affectionate companion that forms strong family bonds. It is sensitive and responds best to patient, positive training. Friendly with children, dogs, and even strangers, it lacks strong guarding instincts. In the field it is focused and biddable, and at home it is a mellow, devoted housemate given enough exercise.
