About the Bluetick Coonhound
The Bluetick Coonhound is a striking American scenthound named for the dense mottling of dark blue ticking across its coat. Bred to trail and tree raccoons and larger game through the night, it is a cold-nosed tracker capable of following faint, aged scent for miles while sounding its famous baying bark. Muscular, determined, and endlessly enthusiastic on a trail, it is also an easygoing, affectionate housemate that loves its people. This is a hound built for the outdoors: it needs plenty of exercise, secure fencing against its powerful nose, and patient training that works with its independent, one-track hunting mind.
Every dog is an individual — genetics, socialization, health, training, and environment matter more than breed averages.

History
The Bluetick Coonhound descends from English foxhounds and French hounds, including the Grand Bleu de Gascogne, brought to the American South by colonial settlers. It was originally registered under the English Coonhound name before being recognized separately in 1946 as breeders selected for its cold-nosed, deliberate trailing style. The breed is a fixture of Southern hunting culture and serves as the mascot of the University of Tennessee. It is recognized by the UKC and the AKC.
Temperament
Friendly, devoted, and easygoing at home, the Bluetick Coonhound becomes single-minded and driven on a scent trail. It is intelligent but independent, bred to work far from its handler, which makes recall and off-leash reliability a challenge. Affectionate and good-natured with family and children, it is vocal, with a loud, distinctive bay. It gets along with other dogs but its high prey drive means caution around small pets.
Questions to ask a Bluetick Coonhound breeder
- Are the parents from hunting or bench lines?
- Have the parents been screened for hip dysplasia?
- How much daily exercise do your dogs require?
- How vocal are the parent dogs?
Health considerations to discuss
Hip dysplasia. Ask for hip evaluations on both parents.
Ear infections. Long drop ears trap moisture; regular cleaning is important.
