About the Bohemian Shepherd

The Bohemian Shepherd is an old Czech herding and guarding breed resembling a smaller, lighter German Shepherd with a rich black-and-tan coat and a thick, weatherproof ruff. Bred to guard the Bohemian borderlands and manage flocks, it is versatile, hardy, and highly trainable, excelling today in obedience, agility, search-and-rescue, and as a family companion. Friendly, affectionate, and notably good with children, it is more approachable and less intense than many working shepherds while retaining keen alertness and loyalty. It needs moderate to high daily exercise, mental engagement, and inclusion in family life to be at its best. Regular brushing keeps its double coat healthy.

Every dog is an individual — genetics, socialization, health, training, and environment matter more than breed averages.

History

The Bohemian Shepherd, or Chodský pes, traces to the border region of Bohemia in the present-day Czech Republic, where the Chod people used it to guard the frontier and herd livestock as far back as the 14th century. The breed nearly vanished but was reconstructed by Czech enthusiasts beginning in the 1980s. It is recognized nationally in the Czech Republic and by some registries, and is accepted into the AKC Foundation Stock Service. It remains rare outside its homeland.

Temperament

Friendly, loyal, and even-tempered, the Bohemian Shepherd is an affectionate family dog that bonds closely with all household members and is especially gentle with children. It is intelligent, eager to please, and highly trainable, thriving on activity and tasks. Alert and watchful, it makes a good watchdog without excessive aggression. It generally gets along well with other dogs and adapts to varied lifestyles when given enough exercise.
