About the Borzoi

The Borzoi is a tall, elegant Russian sighthound bred by the aristocracy to course wolves across the open steppe. Combining greyhound speed with a long, silky coat and a graceful, arched profile, it moves with breathtaking swiftness and quiet dignity. At home it is a calm, gentle, and somewhat aloof companion, catlike in its cleanliness and independence, content to lounge for hours between bursts of activity. Intelligent but sensitive and self-directed, it responds to patient, gentle training rather than force. Its intense prey drive means small animals and off-leash freedom require caution, and secure fencing is essential. It rewards owners who appreciate a serene, reserved hound.

Every dog is an individual — genetics, socialization, health, training, and environment matter more than breed averages.

History

The Borzoi, historically called the Russian Wolfhound, was developed by Russian nobility from the 17th century, crossing Arabian sighthounds with thick-coated native breeds to withstand the harsh climate. Grand hunts on vast estates used packs of Borzoi to course wolves. After the Russian Revolution many dogs were lost, but the breed had already spread to Western Europe and America. It was recognized by the AKC in 1891 and remains a classic sighthound.

Temperament

Gentle, dignified, and independent, the Borzoi is a quiet and affectionate companion that bonds with its family while remaining reserved with strangers. It is sensitive and does not respond to harsh methods, needing calm, patient training. Its powerful prey drive makes it prone to chasing anything that runs, so leashes and fences are vital. Generally calm indoors, it is gentle with respectful children but not tolerant of rough handling.
