About the Bouvier des Flandres
The Bouvier des Flandres is a big, rugged, powerfully built herding dog from the farmlands of Belgium and northern France, where he pulled carts, drove cattle, and guarded property. Beneath a tousled, weatherproof double coat and signature beard sits a calm, steady, and remarkably intelligent worker. Despite his imposing size and protective instincts, the Bouvier is even-tempered and devoted, forming strong family bonds and making a level-headed guardian. He needs regular exercise and a job to stay balanced, plus committed grooming to keep that shaggy coat from matting. Loyal and trainable, he suits owners ready to invest in structure, socialization, and steady leadership for a large working companion.
Every dog is an individual — genetics, socialization, health, training, and environment matter more than breed averages.

History
The Bouvier des Flandres was developed by farmers and cattle drovers in the Flanders region of Belgium and northern France as an all-purpose farm dog for herding, cart-pulling, and guarding. The breed was nearly wiped out during World War I, when its home region became a battlefield, and dedicated breeders rebuilt it in the years that followed. It is recognized by the AKC in the Herding Group.
