About the Boykin Spaniel
The Boykin Spaniel is a versatile American flushing and retrieving dog developed in South Carolina for hunting wild turkey and waterfowl from small boats. Compact but sturdy, with a rich liver or chocolate wavy coat and warm amber eyes, it is often called the 'little brown dog' of the Southeast. Enthusiastic, tireless, and eager to please, it excels at flushing and retrieving in swamps and fields while remaining an affectionate, friendly family companion. It is smart and highly trainable, thriving on activity, water work, and close human contact. This is an energetic sporting breed that needs regular vigorous exercise and does best with active, outdoors-oriented families.
Every dog is an individual — genetics, socialization, health, training, and environment matter more than breed averages.

History
The Boykin Spaniel arose in the early 1900s around Camden, South Carolina, reportedly from a small stray spaniel that proved a gifted turkey dog. Breeders under the Boykin family refined it with spaniel and retriever stock into a compact hunting dog ideal for the region's boat-based hunting. It became the official state dog of South Carolina in 1985 and received AKC full recognition in the Sporting Group in 2009. It remains most popular in the American South.
Temperament
Friendly, eager, and affectionate, the Boykin Spaniel is a cheerful, people-oriented dog that bonds closely with its family and gets along well with children and other dogs. It is intelligent, biddable, and enthusiastic in training, especially around water and retrieving games. High-energy and playful, it needs an active outlet or it may become restless. Generally social and outgoing, it makes both a keen hunting partner and a warm companion.
