About the Braque du Bourbonnais

The Braque du Bourbonnais is an old French pointing breed from the Bourbonnais region, notable for its faded lilac or peach-toned ticked coat and, traditionally, a naturally short or absent tail. Compact, rustic, and athletic, it is an early-maturing gundog that points naturally as a puppy and works close, methodically covering ground with a keen nose. Beyond hunting it is affectionate, gentle, and strongly attached to its family, earning a reputation as a devoted companion that bonds intensely with its owner. Sensitive and eager to please, it trains readily with kindness and needs plenty of exercise and close human contact to flourish.

Every dog is an individual — genetics, socialization, health, training, and environment matter more than breed averages.

History

The Braque du Bourbonnais dates to at least the Renaissance in the Bourbonnais region of central France, making it one of the older French pointing breeds. It nearly vanished in the mid-20th century, partly because strict color and bobtail standards limited breeding stock. A dedicated revival beginning in the 1970s reestablished the breed with broadened standards. It is recognized by the FCI and the UKC and has a small but growing following in North America.

Temperament

Affectionate, gentle, and devoted, the Braque du Bourbonnais bonds intensely with its family and is often described as a velcro dog that craves closeness. It is sensitive, intelligent, and eager to please, training easily with positive, patient methods. Good with children and generally friendly with other dogs, it is a versatile, willing gundog in the field. It needs regular exercise and dislikes prolonged isolation.
