About the Broholmer

The Broholmer is a large, powerful Danish mastiff historically kept to guard estates and hunt large game. Substantial and rectangular in build, with a broad head, calm eyes, and a short yellow, black, or red coat, it projects strength and dignity without excessive bulk. Despite its imposing size it is known for a gentle, steady, and good-natured temperament, being calm and affectionate with its family and reliably tolerant of children. Watchful and confident, it makes a natural guardian without being aggressive when well socialized. It needs moderate daily exercise, early training, and space, rewarding owners with a mellow, devoted, and dependable companion.

Every dog is an individual — genetics, socialization, health, training, and environment matter more than breed averages.

History

The Broholmer takes its name from Broholm Castle on the Danish island of Funen, where in the 18th and 19th centuries the estate's owner promoted the breed as a guard and hunting dog. It descends from old mastiff-type dogs and was once widespread in Denmark. The breed nearly disappeared after the World Wars but was revived from the 1970s by Danish enthusiasts and a national breeding program. It is recognized by the FCI as a Danish breed.

Temperament

Calm, good-natured, and steady, the Broholmer is a gentle giant that is affectionate and patient with its family and typically excellent with children. It is watchful and confident, guarding its home with a composed rather than reactive manner. Intelligent and generally easygoing, it responds well to calm, consistent training. It bonds closely with its people and does best with early socialization and inclusion in family life.
