About the Bucovina Shepherd Dog
The Bucovina Shepherd Dog is a massive Romanian livestock guardian bred to protect flocks from wolves and bears in the Carpathian Mountains. Powerfully built with a broad head, deep chest, and a dense, coarse double coat in white with grey, black, or sandy patches, it is calm and deliberate yet formidable when its charges are threatened. Historically independent, it works with little human direction, patrolling and confronting predators with courage and a deep, booming bark. Deeply devoted and protective of family and territory, it is gentle with its own people yet highly suspicious of strangers. A serious guardian breed, it needs experienced owners, space, and thorough socialization.
Every dog is an individual — genetics, socialization, health, training, and environment matter more than breed averages.

History
The Bucovina Shepherd Dog, also called the Southeastern European Shepherd or Bucovina Sheepdog, comes from the Bukovina and Carpathian regions of Romania and neighboring lands, where it has guarded livestock for centuries. It developed as a landrace guardian selected for size, hardiness, and protective instinct rather than appearance. Romanian breeders formalized a standard in modern times, and it is recognized by the FCI on a provisional basis. It remains rare outside its native region.
Temperament
Calm, confident, and intensely protective, the Bucovina Shepherd Dog is devoted to its family and flock while remaining deeply wary of strangers. It is independent and territorial by nature, bred to make its own decisions when guarding, which makes obedience training a matter of respect rather than rote command. It is typically gentle and steady with its own people and animals but requires early, extensive socialization. It patrols and barks, especially at night.
