About the Cairn Terrier
The Cairn Terrier is a small, shaggy, weatherproof earthdog from the Scottish Highlands, most famous as Toto in The Wizard of Oz. Bred to bolt vermin from rock piles (cairns), it is bold, tireless, and remarkably hardy for its size. The wiry double coat comes in many colors and requires regular hand-stripping or tidying. Alert and inquisitive, the Cairn is a busy little dog that loves to dig and explore, with a strong prey drive. It is affectionate and adaptable, fitting well into active families or apartments so long as it gets daily exercise and mental stimulation. Cheerful and spirited, it retains its rugged working-terrier character.
Every dog is an individual — genetics, socialization, health, training, and environment matter more than breed averages.

History
The Cairn Terrier is one of Scotland's oldest working terriers, developed on the Isle of Skye and the western Highlands to hunt rodents and foxes among stone cairns. Long grouped with Scottish and West Highland terriers, it was recognized as a distinct breed in the early 20th century, with the AKC granting recognition in 1913.
Temperament
Cairns are bold, curious, and cheerful, always ready for adventure. They are affectionate with family and generally good with children, but their terrier instincts mean they will chase small animals and dig enthusiastically. Intelligent and independent, they respond best to positive, engaging training.
Questions to ask a Cairn Terrier breeder
- Have the parents been screened for hereditary eye disorders?
- Is there any history of Legg-Calve-Perthes disease or luxating patella in the line?
- Have the parents been tested for Krabbe disease (globoid cell leukodystrophy)?
Health considerations to discuss
Luxating patella. Slipping kneecaps occur in small terriers; a veterinary orthopedic check is worthwhile.
Ocular melanosis / glaucoma. A hereditary eye pigment condition can lead to glaucoma; annual eye exams are recommended.
Globoid cell leukodystrophy (Krabbe). A rare inherited neurological disease with a DNA test available for carriers.
