About the Carpathian Shepherd Dog
The Carpathian Shepherd Dog is a large Romanian livestock guardian bred to protect flocks from wolves and bears in the Carpathian Mountains. Rugged and powerful, it has a dense, weatherproof double coat, usually wolf-grey or fawn with darker shading, suited to harsh mountain weather. Independent, vigilant, and courageous, it works with minimal direction, making its own decisions to defend the herd. It is devoted and gentle with its family but naturally suspicious of intruders and predators. This is a serious guardian requiring space, a job, and an experienced owner who understands the independence and territorial drive of flock-protection breeds.
Every dog is an individual — genetics, socialization, health, training, and environment matter more than breed averages.

They are independent thinkers bred to act without commands, so they need confident leadership and early socialization. They are territorial and reserved with strangers.
Questions to ask a Carpathian Shepherd Dog breeder

- Are the dogs working guardians, and what is their temperament?

Health considerations to discuss
Hip dysplasia. Common in large guardian breeds; screening of breeding dogs is recommended.
Elbow dysplasia. Joint evaluation reduces the risk of inherited lameness.
