About the Castro Laboreiro Dog
The Castro Laboreiro Dog is an ancient Portuguese livestock guardian from the mountainous Castro Laboreiro region near the Spanish border. Medium-large and athletic, it was bred to protect flocks from wolves and to serve as a farm watchdog. It has a distinctive wolf-grey brindled coat known as 'mountain' color and a deep, resonant bark that carries across valleys. Loyal, alert, and independent, it is devoted to its family and territory while being reserved and wary with strangers. Hardy and sure-footed, it thrives in rural settings with room to patrol. It requires an experienced owner, early socialization, and a purposeful, active life.
Every dog is an individual — genetics, socialization, health, training, and environment matter more than breed averages.

History
The Castro Laboreiro Dog is one of Portugal's oldest breeds, developed in the Peneda-Geres mountains to guard livestock against wolves. It takes its name from the parish of Castro Laboreiro. A breed standard was established in the 20th century, and it is recognized by the FCI and the Portuguese kennel club, though it remains uncommon.
Temperament
Castro Laboreiro Dogs are loyal, courageous, and intensely bonded to their family, with a strong protective instinct and natural wariness of strangers. They are independent and intelligent, bred to guard with little supervision, so they benefit from firm, respectful handling. They are calm at home but resolute when defending their charges.
