About the Caucasian Shepherd Dog
The Caucasian Shepherd Dog, or Caucasian Ovcharka, is a massive livestock guardian from the Caucasus mountains, bred over centuries to defend flocks from wolves and bears. One of the largest and most powerful guardian breeds, it has a thick double coat, a broad head, and an imposing, bear-like presence. Fearless, territorial, and intensely protective, it is deeply devoted to its family while being formidable toward intruders and predators. This is not a beginner's dog: it needs an experienced, confident owner, extensive socialization, secure containment, and firm, respectful training. In the right hands it is a calm, loyal, and supremely capable guardian.
Every dog is an individual — genetics, socialization, health, training, and environment matter more than breed averages.

History
The Caucasian Shepherd Dog descends from ancient molossoid guardian dogs of the Caucasus region spanning Georgia, Armenia, Azerbaijan, and southern Russia. It was bred by mountain shepherds to protect livestock from large predators, and later used by the former Soviet Union for guarding. It is recognized by the FCI, with regional varieties reflecting different mountain populations.
Temperament

They are independent thinkers bred to act alone, requiring an assertive owner and thorough early socialization. Calm and steady at home, they can be extremely formidable toward perceived threats.
Questions to ask a Caucasian Shepherd Dog breeder

Health considerations to discuss
Hip and elbow dysplasia. Common in giant breeds; joint screening of breeding stock is essential.
