About the Cesky Terrier

The Cesky Terrier, or Bohemian Terrier, is a small, elegant hunting terrier developed in the Czech Republic to work fox and vermin in dens and dense cover. More laid-back than most terriers, it has a soft, silky, wavy coat, usually in shades of grey-blue, that is clipped rather than stripped. Low to the ground and muscular, it is agile in the field yet calm and gentle at home. Loyal, patient, and less scrappy than its terrier relatives, it makes an adaptable companion for families and apartment dwellers. It is intelligent and trainable, though it retains a hunting instinct and enjoys moderate daily activity.

Every dog is an individual — genetics, socialization, health, training, and environment matter more than breed averages.

  • Low-shedding coat suited to apartment living
  • Loyal, gentle, and good with family

  • Soft coat needs regular clipping and brushing
  • Retains a hunting drive and may chase small animals
  • Can be reserved with strangers

History

The Cesky Terrier was created in the 1940s and 1950s by Czech breeder Frantisek Horak, who crossed the Sealyham Terrier with the Scottish Terrier to produce a narrower, more tractable hunting terrier. The goal was a calmer dog that could work game in packs. It was recognized by the FCI in 1963 and by the AKC in 2011.

Temperament

Cesky Terriers are calmer and more even-tempered than most terriers, being loyal, patient, and gentle with their families. They are intelligent and trainable, though they retain a hunting drive and can be reserved with strangers. Generally sociable, they get along well with children and, with socialization, other dogs.

Health considerations to discuss

Scottie cramp / neuromuscular. Related to ancestry, movement disorders are occasionally seen; ask about DNA and family history.

Luxating patella. Slipping kneecaps can affect small breeds; an orthopedic check is worthwhile.

Cardiac conditions. Periodic heart evaluations of breeding stock are recommended.
