About the Chesapeake Bay Retriever
The Chesapeake Bay Retriever is a powerful American gundog bred to retrieve waterfowl from the cold, rough waters of the Chesapeake Bay. Tougher and more independent than other retrievers, the 'Chessie' has a dense, oily, wavy double coat that repels water and comes in shades of brown, sedge, and deadgrass. Strong-willed, courageous, and tireless, it is a devoted family companion and an exceptional working retriever with great endurance. More protective and reserved with strangers than a Labrador, it needs firm, consistent training and plenty of exercise. Loyal and hardworking, the Chessie thrives with active owners who appreciate its determination and love of water.
Every dog is an individual — genetics, socialization, health, training, and environment matter more than breed averages.

History
The Chesapeake Bay Retriever developed in the early 19th century along the Maryland and Virginia shores of the Chesapeake Bay, tracing to two Newfoundland-type dogs rescued from a shipwreck in 1807, later crossed with local retrievers and hounds. Bred to withstand icy water and retrieve large numbers of ducks, it became the state dog of Maryland and was recognized by the AKC in 1878.
Temperament
Chessies are bright, determined, and independent, with a strong work ethic and a protective, loyal nature toward their families. They are more reserved with strangers and can be strong-willed, requiring confident, consistent training and early socialization. Devoted and affectionate at home, they excel with owners who provide direction and plenty of activity.
