About the Chihuahua
The world's smallest dog carries one of its largest personalities. A Chihuahua bonds with the ferocity of a much bigger guardian, prefers its chosen person with open favoritism, and lives long enough - often into the mid-teens - to make that bond a genuine life chapter. Treated like a dog rather than an accessory, Chis are portable, clever, inexpensive to keep, and endlessly engaged with their households. Skip the socialization or the boundaries, and the same intensity curdles into yappy suspicion. The difference is entirely in the raising.
Every dog is an individual — genetics, socialization, health, training, and environment matter more than breed averages.

History
Descended from the Techichi companion dogs of ancient Mesoamerica, the breed took its modern name from the Mexican state where American visitors found the little dogs in the 1800s; AKC recognition came in 1904.
Temperament
Devoted, alert, and boldly self-assured; a one-person heart with room for a carefully vetted inner circle.
Questions to ask a Chihuahua breeder
- Have the parents had patella and cardiac checks?
- Do you place puppies under six months or under two pounds? (Be wary of yes.)
- How do you socialize such small puppies safely?
Health considerations to discuss
Patellar luxation. The standard toy-knee question - ask for evaluations.
Dental disease. Tiny mouths crowd teeth; budget for dental care.
Tracheal collapse. Walk on a harness, never a neck collar.
