About the Chinese Shar-Pei
The Chinese Shar-Pei is a calm, deeply loyal guardian best known for its loose, wrinkled skin, hippopotamus-like muzzle, and small, sunken eyes. Devoted and watchful with its family, this ancient Chinese breed is naturally reserved and independent, showing a dignified suspicion of strangers that reflects its history as a farm and guard dog. Shar-Pei are quiet and moderate in their exercise needs, but their signature folds and bristly coat require attentive routine care to keep the skin healthy and dry. Their strong-willed, aloof personality rewards early socialization and confident, consistent handling from an owner who understands independent breeds.
Every dog is an individual — genetics, socialization, health, training, and environment matter more than breed averages.

History
The Chinese Shar-Pei is an ancient breed from the southern provinces of China, where it worked as a farm dog, hunter, herder, and guardian. Its numbers collapsed in the mid-twentieth century, and it was once cited as one of the world's rarest breeds. A 1970s appeal to Western dog lovers helped revive the breed, and the AKC granted full recognition in 1992.
Temperament
The Shar-Pei is devoted, calm, and dignified with its family while remaining aloof and suspicious toward strangers. Independent and strong-willed, it is not naturally eager to please and needs firm, patient guidance. Early socialization helps temper its guarding instincts and wariness of other animals.
