About the Chow Chow
The Chow Chow is a dignified, aloof companion instantly recognized by its lion-like ruff, deep-set eyes, and distinctive blue-black tongue. Independent and almost cat-like in temperament, the Chow forms a quiet, devoted bond with its own people while remaining reserved and discerning toward strangers. This is not a demonstrative or eager-to-please breed; it values its own space and responds best to calm, respectful, early socialization and patient training. Its profuse double coat, in either rough or smooth varieties, demands consistent brushing, and its serious, self-possessed nature makes it a better match for owners who appreciate a low-key but strongly loyal guardian.
Every dog is an individual β genetics, socialization, health, training, and environment matter more than breed averages.

History
The Chow Chow is one of the oldest recognizable dog breeds, with roots in ancient China where it served as a hunting, herding, guarding, and hauling dog. Chinese artwork and pottery depict Chow-like dogs dating back roughly two thousand years. The breed reached the West in the late eighteenth and nineteenth centuries through trade with China and was recognized by the AKC in 1903.
Temperament
Reserved, dignified, and fiercely loyal to its family, the Chow Chow is naturally independent and slow to warm to strangers. It is generally quiet and undemonstrative, showing affection on its own terms. Early socialization is essential, as the breed can be territorial and intolerant of unfamiliar dogs.
