About the Dalmatian
The Dalmatian is instantly recognizable for its clean white coat scattered with black or liver spots, but there is far more to this breed than its famous looks. Originally bred to trot for miles alongside horse-drawn coaches, the Dalmatian is a true endurance athlete with remarkable stamina and a deep need for vigorous daily exercise. Under-exercised Dals can become bored and destructive, so this is a dog for active people rather than sedentary homes. They are affectionate, outgoing, and loyal, forming strong bonds with their families and thriving on inclusion. Two breed-specific issues deserve special attention: a meaningful percentage are born deaf, and every Dalmatian carries a metabolic trait that raises the risk of urate bladder stones.
Every dog is an individual — genetics, socialization, health, training, and environment matter more than breed averages.

History
The Dalmatian takes its name from Dalmatia, a historical region along the Adriatic coast of present-day Croatia. The breed earned lasting fame as a coach dog, trotting alongside carriages to guard horses and travelers, and later became the traditional mascot of horse-drawn fire engines. Its stamina and affinity for horses defined its working role for generations. The American Kennel Club recognized the Dalmatian in 1888.
Temperament
Dalmatians are energetic, outgoing, and devoted companions that bond closely with active families. Bred to run for miles, they carry an athletic drive and need abundant exercise and mental stimulation to stay balanced. They are intelligent and trainable but can be strong-willed, and early socialization helps them become confident, well-mannered adults.
