About the Deutsche Bracke

The Deutsche Bracke is a medium-sized German scenthound bred to trail game across the varied terrain of western Germany, particularly the Westphalia region. Elegant yet sturdy, it carries a tricolor coat of red to yellow with a black saddle and the white blaze, collar, and leg markings of many bracke-type hounds. Known for its exceptional nose, melodious voice, and tireless stamina, it works both individually and in packs to track hare, fox, and wounded game. Friendly, even-tempered, and sociable, the Deutsche Bracke is a gentle companion at home but retains strong hunting instincts and a powerful scent drive, needing secure fencing and exercise.

Every dog is an individual — genetics, socialization, health, training, and environment matter more than breed averages.

History

The Deutsche Bracke descends from various regional German brackes that were consolidated in 1896 when breeders in Olpe, Westphalia, unified several local strains under one standard. It is among the oldest surviving German scenthound types and was historically used to trail hare and fox over long distances. The FCI recognizes the breed, though it remains uncommon outside Germany.

Temperament

This is a friendly, even-tempered hound that is affectionate with family and generally sociable with other dogs, reflecting its pack-hunting heritage. It is driven and persistent when following a scent, often becoming single-minded on a trail and slow to respond to recall. At home it is calm and companionable but needs ample exercise and a securely fenced area.

Health considerations to discuss

Ear infections. Pendulous ears trap moisture; regular cleaning helps prevent infection.

Hip dysplasia. Screening of breeding stock is advisable for this active hound.
