About the Drentsche Patrijshond
The Drentsche Patrijshond, or Drent, is a versatile Dutch gundog originating in the Drenthe province of the Netherlands, where it served farming families as a pointer, retriever, watchdog, and companion. Medium-sized and moderately built, it wears a medium-length white coat with brown or orange markings, often including a mantle and speckling. Prized for its all-around ability, the Drent points and retrieves game while staying calm, gentle, and devoted in the home. Intelligent and sensitive, it responds best to patient training and forms strong attachments to its family, including children. Balanced in energy, it needs regular exercise but settles readily indoors, an appealing family and hunting companion.
Every dog is an individual — genetics, socialization, health, training, and environment matter more than breed averages.

History
The breed descends from spaniel-type dogs brought to the Netherlands via France and Spain in the 16th century, developing in the rural Drenthe province as an all-purpose farm and hunting dog. Kept relatively pure by isolated farming communities, it was officially recognized by the Dutch Kennel Club (Raad van Beheer) in 1943. The FCI recognizes the breed, which remains most numerous in the Netherlands.
Temperament
Drents are loyal, gentle, and affectionate, forming close bonds with their families and doing well with children. They are intelligent and eager to please but also sensitive, so harsh methods are counterproductive. In the field they are versatile and enthusiastic, while at home they are calm and devoted watchdogs.
