About the Drever
The Drever is a short-legged Swedish scenthound bred to drive deer and other game toward waiting hunters at a steady, deliberate pace. Longer than it is tall, it has a sturdy, muscular body set low to the ground and a short, dense coat of any color combined with white markings. Despite its small stature, the Drever is a tireless, determined tracker with an excellent nose and a resonant, ringing bark used to signal its progress on a trail. Friendly, calm, and affectionate at home, it makes a companionable family dog while retaining strong hunting instincts. It thrives with owners who can provide regular exercise and appreciate its good-natured, steady temperament.
Every dog is an individual — genetics, socialization, health, training, and environment matter more than breed averages.

History
The Drever was developed in Sweden in the early 20th century from the German Westphalian Dachsbracke, which was imported and adapted for driving deer in Swedish hunting conditions. The name Drever, chosen through a 1947 competition, comes from the Swedish word for a dog that drives game. It is recognized by the FCI and is a popular hunting hound in Sweden, though rare elsewhere.
Temperament
Drevers are friendly, even-tempered, and affectionate, making steady companions that generally get along well with people and other dogs. They are alert and can be watchful, with a strong, ringing voice on the trail and a tendency to bark. Persistent and focused when hunting, they are calm and content at home when given sufficient exercise.
Questions to ask a Drever breeder
- Are the parents used for hunting, and what is their tracking ability?
- Have the dogs been evaluated for back and joint health?
- How vocal are the parents, and how are pups socialized to home life?
Health considerations to discuss
Intervertebral disc disease. The long, low body can predispose to back problems; avoid excessive jumping.
Ear infections. Drop ears benefit from regular cleaning to prevent infection.
Obesity. Weight gain strains the back and joints, so diet and exercise need monitoring.
