About the East Siberian Laika
The East Siberian Laika is a large, powerful spitz-type hunting dog developed across the vast taiga of eastern Siberia, where it serves indigenous and Russian hunters as a versatile game dog. Sturdy and well-boned, it has a thick double coat that withstands extreme cold, prick ears, and a curled tail typical of northern breeds. Bred to hunt large and small game, from squirrel and sable to boar and bear, it works independently, treeing and holding game while signaling the hunter with its voice. Loyal and affectionate with its owner yet reserved with strangers, the East Siberian Laika is territorial and self-reliant. It needs an experienced owner, plenty of exercise, and outlets for its strong hunting instincts.
Every dog is an individual — genetics, socialization, health, training, and environment matter more than breed averages.

History
The East Siberian Laika descends from ancient aboriginal hunting dogs of the eastern Siberian taiga, kept by indigenous peoples for hunting and sledding. Soviet cynologists formalized the breed in the mid-20th century, establishing a standard around 1947 to preserve the largest of the Russian laika types. It is recognized by the FCI and remains primarily a working hunting dog in Russia.
Temperament
This breed is loyal and devoted to its owner while remaining independent, self-reliant, and reserved toward strangers. It is a determined, courageous hunter with strong territorial instincts and a powerful voice used to signal treed game. It requires firm, consistent leadership, early socialization, and a job to do, and it is not well suited to inexperienced or sedentary households.
