About the Entlebucher Mountain Dog
The Entlebucher Mountain Dog is the smallest of the four Swiss Sennenhund breeds, developed in the Entlebuch valley to herd cattle and guard alpine farms. Compact, muscular, and low to the ground, it has a short, glossy tricolor coat of black with tan and white markings and a bright, alert expression. Energetic, intelligent, and confident, the Entlebucher is an agile, tireless worker that also excels in dog sports and active family life. Devoted and affectionate with its people, it is lively and can be strong-willed, requiring firm, consistent training and plenty of exercise. Naturally protective and reserved with strangers, this hardy, spirited breed thrives with active owners who can channel its abundant energy and drive.
Every dog is an individual — genetics, socialization, health, training, and environment matter more than breed averages.

History
The Entlebucher is one of four traditional Swiss mountain dogs, named for the Entlebuch region of the cantons of Lucerne and Bern, where it drove and herded cattle. The breed was nearly lost until efforts in the early 20th century revived it, with a first standard written in 1927. It is recognized by the FCI and gained AKC full recognition in 2011.
Temperament
Entlebuchers are energetic, intelligent, and confident, forming strong bonds with their families and showing devotion and enthusiasm. They are lively and can be headstrong, needing consistent training and firm guidance, and they are naturally alert and somewhat reserved with strangers. Their herding heritage gives them a strong drive and a tendency to be vocal and physically active.
