About the Estonian Hound
The Estonian Hound is a medium-sized scenthound and the only dog breed developed in Estonia, created in the mid-20th century to hunt hare and fox within legal size limits set for hunting dogs. Compact and sturdy with a short, dense tricolor or black-and-tan coat with white markings, it combines a keen nose and persistent tracking ability with a manageable, moderate size. Friendly, even-tempered, and sociable, the Estonian Hound makes a good companion as well as a capable hunter, getting along well with people, children, and other dogs. It has a loud, expressive voice on the trail and strong scent drive, so it needs regular exercise, secure containment, and engagement to stay content and well-behaved.
Every dog is an individual — genetics, socialization, health, training, and environment matter more than breed averages.

History
The Estonian Hound was developed in the Soviet era, beginning in the 1940s, when authorities required a smaller hunting hound suited to regional game laws limiting the size of hunting dogs. Breeders crossed local hounds with Beagles, Swiss Hounds, and other scenthounds to create a standardized breed, officially recognized in 1954. It is Estonia's national dog and is recognized by the FCI.
Temperament
Estonian Hounds are friendly, even-tempered, and sociable, making them pleasant companions that generally do well with children and other dogs. They are energetic and driven when following a scent, with a loud, musical voice used on the trail. Balanced and adaptable at home, they need adequate exercise and secure areas to satisfy their hunting instincts.
