About the Estrela Mountain Dog
The Estrela Mountain Dog is a large, powerful livestock guardian from the Serra da Estrela mountains of Portugal, where it has protected flocks from wolves and thieves for centuries. Imposing and well-built, it has a broad head, a distinctive hook-tipped tail, and a thick coat in fawn, brindle, or wolf-grey, available in long and short varieties, that shields it from harsh mountain weather. Loyal, calm, and deeply devoted to its family, the Estrela is naturally protective and wary of strangers, making it a formidable guardian. Independent and strong-willed by nature, it requires early socialization, confident leadership, and space to move. With the right owner, it is an affectionate, steadfast companion and a serious working guardian.
Every dog is an individual — genetics, socialization, health, training, and environment matter more than breed averages.

History
One of Portugal's oldest breeds, the Estrela Mountain Dog developed among shepherds in the Serra da Estrela range to guard livestock in rugged, isolated terrain. Its exact origins are ancient and undocumented, but it has served as a flock guardian and farm protector for many centuries. The breed is recognized by the FCI and has an official Portuguese standard, though it remains uncommon outside its homeland.
Temperament
Estrelas are loyal, calm, and affectionate with their families while remaining naturally protective and reserved toward strangers. They are independent and strong-willed, traits suited to guardian work but requiring early socialization and confident, consistent handling. Devoted and steady, they can be dominant with other dogs and take their guarding role seriously.
