About the Field Spaniel

The Field Spaniel is a medium-sized British gundog bred to flush and retrieve game, distinguished by its noble, well-balanced build and glossy single-color coat in black, liver, or roan. Slightly longer than tall, it moves with an effortless, ground-covering stride and carries a gentle, docile expression. Known for its calm, affectionate, and sensitive nature, the Field Spaniel is devoted to its family, good with children, and eager to please, though it can be sensitive to harsh handling. Once nearly lost to exaggerated breeding, the breed was restored to a more moderate, functional type. Intelligent and versatile, it enjoys both fieldwork and family life, thriving with regular exercise and close human companionship.

Every dog is an individual — genetics, socialization, health, training, and environment matter more than breed averages.

History

The Field Spaniel emerged in Victorian England as breeders sought to distinguish larger, solid-colored spaniels from the smaller Cockers. Overzealous breeding for length and lowness in the late 1800s produced exaggerated, unsound dogs, and the breed nearly disappeared before careful restoration returned it to a moderate, working type. It is recognized by The Kennel Club and the AKC and remains one of the rarer spaniel breeds.

Temperament

Field Spaniels are gentle, affectionate, and docile, forming devoted bonds with their families and generally being good with children and other animals. They are intelligent and eager to please but also sensitive, responding best to calm, positive training. Somewhat reserved with strangers, they thrive on companionship and can be independent-minded in the field.
