About the Finnish Hound
The Finnish Hound is a medium to large scenthound bred to trail hare and fox across the forests and snow of Finland, where it is one of the country's most popular hunting dogs. Athletic and well-balanced with a tricolor coat of black saddle, tan, and white markings, it is built for endurance over rugged, cold terrain. Known for its excellent nose, persistence, and melodious baying voice, the Finnish Hound works independently to track and drive game while signaling the hunter. Calm, friendly, and gentle at home, it is affectionate with family and sociable with other dogs, making a pleasant companion. Its strong hunting drive, energy, and voice mean it needs active owners, secure fencing, and regular exercise.
Every dog is an individual — genetics, socialization, health, training, and environment matter more than breed averages.

History
The Finnish Hound was developed in the 19th and early 20th centuries by crossing German, Swiss, and other European scenthounds to create a hardy hare and fox hound suited to Finnish conditions. A breed standard was established in 1932, and it has become one of Finland's most numerous and beloved hunting breeds. It is recognized by the FCI, though it remains uncommon outside Scandinavia.

They are energetic and determined when hunting, with a strong scent drive and a loud, musical baying voice. Even-tempered at home, they require ample exercise and secure areas to channel their working instincts.
