About the Finnish Spitz
The Finnish Spitz is a lively, fox-like hunting dog and the national dog of Finland, traditionally used to hunt game birds by indicating treed quarry with a rapid, ringing bark. Medium-sized and square in build, it has a glowing golden-red double coat, prick ears, and a plumed tail curled over its back, giving it an elegant, alert appearance. Known as the barking bird dog, it is famously vocal, a trait central to its hunting style. Intelligent, independent, and lively, the Finnish Spitz is affectionate and devoted with its family, good with children, and wary of strangers. It needs regular exercise, patient training, and management of its strong barking tendency to thrive as a companion.
Every dog is an individual — genetics, socialization, health, training, and environment matter more than breed averages.

History
The Finnish Spitz descends from ancient spitz-type dogs brought to Finland thousands of years ago and used by hunters to locate and bark at game birds. By the late 1800s the type had become mixed, and Finnish enthusiasts led by Hugo Roos worked to restore the pure breed, with a standard established in 1892. It is the national dog of Finland, recognized by the FCI, and gained AKC full recognition in 1991.

They are affectionate and devoted to their families, good with children, and generally reserved with strangers. Spirited and somewhat strong-willed, they respond best to patient, positive training and need outlets for their energy and vocal tendencies.
