About the Francais Blanc et Noir
The Francais Blanc et Noir is a large French pack scenthound bred to hunt hare, roe deer and other game across open country in cooperative packs. As its name ("French white and black") indicates, it wears a clean white coat marked with black patches and often tan points on the head and legs. Developed in the early 20th century from crosses of older French hounds with English foxhound blood, it is prized by hunters for its stamina, resonant voice and unfailing nose rather than as a household pet. Even-tempered and sociable with people and fellow hounds, it needs vast amounts of exercise and a working purpose, making it best suited to active rural homes and dedicated hunting kennels.
Every dog is an individual — genetics, socialization, health, training, and environment matter more than breed averages.

- Sociable and non-aggressive with other dogs
- Low-maintenance short coat
Things to consider
- Bred as a working hound, not a companion; requires a hunting outlet
- Strong prey drive and independent nature make off-lead recall difficult
- Loud, far-carrying voice and very high exercise needs
History
The breed was fixed in the early 1900s in central France from the older Gascon-Saintongeois and Poitevin bloodlines, invigorated with English Foxhound crosses to improve pack cohesion and speed. It was recognized as a distinct breed by the Société Centrale Canine and later the FCI, which classifies it among the large French scenthounds. It remains almost exclusively a working hunting dog in its homeland.
Temperament
Francais Blanc et Noir hounds are gentle, even-tempered and thoroughly gregarious, bred to work harmoniously in large packs. They bond amiably with people and are exceptionally sociable with other dogs, but their intense prey drive and roaming instinct make recall unreliable off-lead. They are independent thinkers accustomed to following their nose over obeying commands.
Questions to ask a Francais Blanc et Noir breeder
- Are the dogs worked in a hunting pack, and what game do they pursue?
- How are the puppies socialized to people during early weeks?
- What is the general health and longevity of your kennel's lines?
Health considerations to discuss
Ear infections. Long pendant ears trap moisture and debris, so regular cleaning and drying after work is important.
Hip dysplasia. As with most large hounds, joint screening of breeding stock is advisable.
Working injuries. Active field dogs are prone to cuts, foot-pad damage and strains that need routine checks after hunts.
