About the Francais Tricolore

The Francais Tricolore is a large, athletic French pack scenthound wearing the classic tricolor pattern of white, black and tan. One of the youngest of the French hound breeds, it was standardized in the 20th century for hunting hare, roe deer and larger game in cooperative packs across open terrain. Built for endurance rather than sprinting speed, it works methodically with a fine nose and a deep, ringing voice. Sociable, even-tempered and non-quarrelsome, it lives happily among other hounds but is bred first as a working dog. It needs extensive daily exercise, secure fencing and ideally a real hunting outlet, making it a poor fit for typical pet homes.

Every dog is an individual — genetics, socialization, health, training, and environment matter more than breed averages.

Where this breed shines

  • Tireless endurance and keen nose for pack hunting
  • Peaceable, sociable temperament with dogs and people
  • Easy-care short coat

Things to consider

  • Primarily a working hound needing a hunting role
  • Independent and scent-driven, with poor off-lead reliability
  • Loud voice and demanding exercise requirements

History

The Francais Tricolore was developed in the early-to-mid 20th century by combining Gascon-Saintongeois, Poitevin and English Foxhound bloodlines to create a fast, hardy pack hound. It was among the last of the trio of Francais hounds to be recognized, and the FCI classifies it with the large French scenthounds. In France it is kept and worked almost exclusively by hunting packs.

Temperament

Tricolore hounds are gentle, balanced and highly sociable, having been selected to hunt cooperatively in large groups without conflict. They are friendly toward people and remarkably tolerant of other dogs, but their overriding hunting drive makes them independent and easily distracted by scent. They respond best to patient, consistent handlers who understand hound psychology.

Questions to ask a Francais Tricolore breeder

Health considerations to discuss

Ear infections. Long pendulous ears need regular cleaning to avoid recurring infections.

Hip dysplasia. Screening breeding dogs helps reduce the risk of joint disease in this large hound.

Field injuries. Working over rough ground exposes the dog to cuts, thorns and pad damage that require monitoring.
