About the French Spaniel

The French Spaniel (Epagneul Français) is a medium-large, elegant pointing spaniel and one of the oldest of the continental gundogs, bred to find, point and retrieve game birds. Standing taller and leggier than most spaniels, it wears a medium-length white coat richly patched with brown, and moves with a smooth, ground-covering gait. Beyond its considerable field talent, the French Spaniel is treasured for a notably sweet, gentle and sensitive nature that makes it an affectionate family companion when its energy is met. Devoted, biddable and eager to work with its handler, it responds poorly to harsh methods and thrives on positive training, plenty of exercise and close human contact.

Every dog is an individual — genetics, socialization, health, training, and environment matter more than breed averages.

History

The French Spaniel traces to medieval bird dogs used across France and was one of the pointing breeds favored at the royal court. By the late 19th century numbers had dwindled, and Father Fournier of the Saint-Hilaire kennel is credited with reviving the breed and establishing its standard around 1891. It remains popular as a versatile hunting dog in France and Canada and is recognized by the FCI.

Temperament

French Spaniels are gentle, friendly and eager to please, forming strong bonds with their families. They are sensitive dogs that flourish under kind, consistent guidance and can become timid if handled harshly. Sociable with children and other dogs and possessed of a strong but manageable hunting drive, they combine trainability with an affectionate, calm household presence when adequately exercised.

Health considerations to discuss

Hip dysplasia. Joint screening of breeding dogs helps reduce the risk of arthritis in this athletic breed.

Ear infections. Feathered drop ears can trap moisture and need regular cleaning, especially after fieldwork.

Acral mutilation syndrome. A rare inherited neurological condition affecting the feet has been documented in the breed; ask about affected lines.
