About the Gascon Saintongeois
The Gascon Saintongeois is a large, distinguished French scenthound created by blending the noble Grand Bleu de Gascogne with the now-rare Saintongeois hounds. It exists in two sizes, the Grand type used for larger game such as deer and boar, and the smaller Petit type favored for hare. It wears a fine white-and-black ticked coat with tan points and often the characteristic "blue" mottling of its Gascon ancestry. Calm, dignified and melodious in voice, it is a stamina hunter that trails methodically for hours. Devoted to its handler yet strongly driven by scent, it is best suited to hunters and active rural owners who can provide extensive exercise and a working purpose.
Every dog is an individual — genetics, socialization, health, training, and environment matter more than breed averages.

History
The breed was developed in the 19th century by Baron Joseph de Carayon-Latour, who crossed Grand Bleu de Gascogne hounds with the last surviving Saintongeois to preserve that bloodline. The result reinvigorated the old Gascon type while incorporating Saintongeois qualities. Recognized by the FCI, it is maintained in France as a working pack and big-game hound.
Temperament
Gascon Saintongeois hounds are gentle, calm and affectionate with their people, showing the composed dignity typical of the large blue Gascony hounds. They are sociable with other dogs and cooperative in the pack, but deeply independent and single-minded when following a scent. Their hunting focus and need for space make them thrive with experienced, active owners rather than novices.
