About the German Shorthaired Pointer
The German Shorthaired Pointer, or GSP, is a versatile, medium-sized gundog that combines endurance, intelligence, and an outgoing, affectionate personality. It is one of the most athletic breeds a family can own, and that is both its greatest appeal and its biggest demand: a GSP needs substantial daily exercise plus mental stimulation, and a bored, under-worked one will dig, chew, and bolt. Buyers who hunt, run, or pursue dog sports get an enthusiastic, willing partner that learns quickly and loves being part of everything the family does. The short, dense coat is easy to care for, though GSPs do shed and can be more high-strung indoors than their sleek looks suggest. They are generally friendly with children and other dogs when socialized, but their strong prey drive means small pets and unfenced yards are a concern. This is a wonderful breed for an energetic, committed owner and a poor fit for a sedentary or frequently-absent household.
Every dog is an individual — genetics, socialization, health, training, and environment matter more than breed averages.

History
The German Shorthaired Pointer was developed in 19th-century Germany by crossing older pointing breeds to create a single dog that could point, track, and retrieve on land and water. Careful breeding produced a hardy, all-purpose hunting companion. The American Kennel Club recognized the breed in 1930.
Temperament
Smart, eager, and friendly, the GSP is a people-focused dog that bonds closely with its family and aims to please. It is energetic and enthusiastic, needing an outlet for both body and mind. Well-socialized GSPs are affectionate with children and generally sociable with other dogs.
